This magnificent neo-Baroque building, whose 200ft high dome dominates the city skyline, has been the heart of the city centre since 1929. The Old Market Square in front, the largest city square in the UK, dates from Saxon times and was the original site of the famous Goose Fair.

The Old Exchange previously stood on the site and was used for council business from 1879. In the 1920s, Nottingham architect T. Cecil Howitt was commissioned to design Nottingham's prestigious new Council House. The foundation stone was laid in 1927 with the official opening on 22 May 1929 by the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VIII, who opened the great doors with a gold key which is still displayed on a wall plaque inside. The Market Square was redesigned at the same time to create a central procession way. In 2007, the current newly designed Square opened.

The Council House is a vital, living part of the city and the centre of local politics as elected councillors who represent the people of the City of Nottingham conduct much of their business here.

Tours of the Council House by the Guild of Honorary Alderman are available and need to be booked in advance. There is no charge for a tour, but donations are welcome. There are also various public events held each year including Tea Dances.
