Great Saint Mary’s Church, Cambridge

Great St Mary’s is an Anglican church and has maintained its witness to the faith of Christ for many centuries. It has carried out this mission in many ways as a parish church in the diocese of Ely, as the Church of the University of Cambridge, as a place of prayer and celebration for all the citizens of Cambridge.

There has been a church on the site since at least 1200 and the present building dates from the late 15th century. It has the only ring of twelve bells in the county, on which the ‘Westminister chimes’ of Big Ben, more correctly called the ‘Cambridge Quarters’, were composed and first rung.

Entry to Great St Mary’s is free and you can come and go as you please. If you wish to climb the tower there is a small charge but the view is well worth it.
