Royal Arcade and Morgan Arcade are two small Victorian arcades which connect St Mary Street to The Hayes. They are separate from each other but run almost side by side to link the two main streets. Many independent businesses but Morgan Arcade has become increasingly empty.
Royal Arcade was opened in the 1850s and was Cardiff’s first indoor shopping arcade. It significantly increased the number of shops available in the city. Morgan Arcade opened at the end of the 19th century, and was used to connect the two stores of David Morgan - one in The Hayes and the second on St Mary Street. The large David Morgan department store grew up around the arcade and was popular for all of the 20th century, sadly closing in 2005 with the expected competition from the newly developed St David's Centre.
